Boba tea chain Fat Straws Bubble Tea Co. is opening a location in Richardson with a little something extra: Japanese-style mochi doughnuts.
The restaurant will open on June 1 at 1251 W. Campbell Rd., a block east of Campbell Road.
This is the fourth location, joining the original in Plano as well as two locations in Dallas, at Preston-Forest and near the Galleria. But the Richardson store will be larger, to accommodate a commercial kitchen so they can produce mochi doughnuts to be delivered to their other locations.
Mochi doughnuts originated in Japan. They’re made from rice flour, which creates a crispy crust and chewy mochi-like interior. Fat Straws uses the best ingredients: organic strawberries, organic blueberries, and ceremonial grade matcha.
The couple had been searching for something to add to their boba tea menu and finally found it after Terry discovered mochi doughnuts.
Husband-and-wife owners Terry and Jennifer Pham opened their first Fat Straws Bubble Tea Co. in 2002 in Plano after the dot-com bubble burst Terry’s IT career.
Although bubble tea and now mochi doughnuts are the retail side of the business, the Phams also focus on building community and serving others. They hold weekly leisure meetings where they check in with employees on their personal and professional goals, making them not just employees but part of the family.
Fat Straws offers a variety of drink combinations including milk teas, infusions, brews, and blends:
Milk teas are the traditional bubble tea combining black or green tea, milk or non-dairy creamer, and chewy tapioca balls, which are prepared daily.
Infusions are shaken mixtures of green or black tea infused with fruit flavors such as mango, strawberry, peach, and lychee.
Brews are teas from Art of Tea that can be served hot or iced.
Blends are a variety of frozen treats, such as smoothies, slushes, frappes, and tea-inspired shakes.
